Havana Streets

Description

Walking through the streets of old Havana (La Habana vieja). You can still feel the air of former greatness among all the decay. Many buildings have already been restored, but there ist still a lo of work to do. Cubans are masters of improvisation and try to make the best of anything that comes in their way.

-----

The first things that captured my attention in this piece was the dome of the Capitolio at the end of the street. While this particular view is created and not actual (at least not from anywhere I visited), I feel that the actual magnitude of the Capitolio was lost in this piece. It is actually a 300 ft (92m) high dome, and would tower above the city streets even in the distance.

I love the street itself. The cobblestone has such a lifelike characteristic. It is just random enough to emulate actuality. The lines of your buildings are exquisite. The depth becomes very real with the buildings and people shrinking and growing to scale as you "walk" the corridor. I would love to see more color on the people. The colorful buildings are perfect. I can almost hear the Cumbia and smell the empanadas.

Overall, this is a wonderful use of watercolors with very skilled textures and patterns.
